What is Taiyaki?
Taiyaki is a traditional dessert in Japan, which translates to “fried fish”. It can be traced back to the Edo Period in Japan in the 1600s. During this period, fish was the most prized delicacy in the country, and was considered an emblem of luck and prosperity. Using a fish shape mold, stores in japan started to sell Japanese pastries with red bean and other various fillings inside, and it quickly became a very popular street food. The cake is baked to order in cast iron, filled with one’s chosen filling with an opening at the mouth that gets filled with soft- serve ice cream. The warm cone has the crispiness of a waffle on the outside, but the softness of a pancake on the inside, making the contrast of cold and hot something to make one’s mouth water.
